Seafile is a free cloud storage software that is not subject to a fee. In addition to integrated file synchronization, the focus is on protecting users' privacy and team collaboration.
Employees and students of universities in Rhineland-Palatinate can use Seafile as soon as their university has agreed to its use or, to put it more simply: if you can select your university or college when registering and you can log in.
Employees of a university or college in Rhineland-Palatinate can invite external users to use Seafile and share folders or files with them. External users are assigned the Guest role.
If you only occasionally want to share files with someone or provide storage space for uploading, Seafile's operation via the web interface is completely sufficient.
The use of a Seafile client, which must be installed locally on the computer, is recommended in the following situations :
Any regular user or owner of an account at a university or collage in Rhineland-Palatinate can share files via a link, even to persons unrelated to the university.
Personal exchange, use of shared folders and synchronization is only possible among regular users and registered external users or employees in work groups.
Employees (universities in Rhineland-Palatinate): 100 GB
Students: 20 GB
Guests: External users do not have their own storage space, but can use the shared libraries of their work group.
Files up to 5GB can be uploaded via the Seafile website. This restriction does not apply to folders provided each file is no larger than 5GB. However, desktop clients for Linux, Mac and Windows allow you to upload larger files to the server, share them, or synchronize them with other computers.
Synchronizing large files on mobile devices is not recommended due to limited storage space on these devices.
Seafile's desktop clients only synchronize files that remain unchanged for at least three seconds. Files that change faster, such as protocols or files with measured values, can not be synchronized directly.
The synchronization of directories on group drives is much slower than the synchronization of local drives due to the double transfer and should be avoided.
Profile directories with the entire settings of a user are not suitable for synchronization with Seafile due to the large number of locked and fast changing files and directories.
