Seafile-Help: Glossary

Library

A library is a special folder with identical rules for sharing, synchronization, and encryption. In a library both folders and files can be created. Each user has at least one library.

Folder

A folder in Seafile basically corresponds to a folder on a local PC and can also be synchronized with a local folder. In addition, a Seafile folder can also be shared with other users, also anonymously via a link, and serve as an upload store. A Seafile folder must always be inside a library.

Files

A file must always be within a library or folder. The sharing and synchronization settings of the higher-level library are adopted. Files can also be shared anonymously via a link.

Share

When you create a share in Seafile for a folder or library, you allow others to access their folders and files. Shares can be made anonymously by link or personally by username, even for members of a group.

Anonymous shares (only for files and folder)

Download

You can share the entire contents of a folder by link. Anyone with the link can then download files. In addition, a password can be assigned and an expiration date can be entered, after which the link automatically becomes invalid.

Upload

You can share a folder with others for upload so files can be sent to you. In addition, a password can be assigned and an expiration date can be entered, after which the link automatically becomes invalid.

Personal shares

Folders, files and libraries can be shared with a username and password. The sharing of data is also possible for members of a previously created group.

Single Sign-On

This authentication service ensures that users of Rhineland-Palatinate universities can also log in to use Seafile by loggin in at their educational institution.

Groups

Every registered user of Seafile can be a member of one or more groups. Groups can have shared libraries for which group members have read or write access. Libraries shared with a group are automatically synchronized for all group members. Each user can create their own groups.

Syncing

By means of synchronization, identical data is stored on several devices or for several users, e.g. for all members of a group. Seafile always syncs the complete contents of a library. Changes to files made in a local Seafile library will be immediately taken over by the server when connected to the Internet and updated at the next opportunity for all other devices and group members. To use the synchronization, the installation of a Seafile client is necessary.

Seafile-Client

Program that installs on a computer or mobile device and handles the synchronization of files on the Seafile server and the local machine. This makes collaborative work on the team or on multiple devices easier, without the need for users to constantly move files. The client programs are available for different operating systems.

Desktop-Client

Available for Windows XP / Vista / 7/8/10, Mac OS X 10.7 or higher and for Linux both as a graphical user interface and as a terminal client on the download page.

Mobile-Client

Provides access to Seafile libraries and their content from mobile devices. Available for Android and iPhone / iPad on the download page.

Cache

A cache serves as a small memory that can accelerate repeated accesses to a slow medium. Files that have been cached in the cache can therefore be read out faster with repeated access.

Encryption

Seafile supports the encryption of entire libraries. The key (the password) is not stored on the server, except when using the mobile client, the web browser and the file browser of the desktop client. Here the password is stored on the server for one hour. Attention: If you lose the key, you can not recover your data.

Further information regarding the encryption can be found here:

Cloud

With a cloud, files can be stored in a computer network and are no longer stored locally on the computer.
